I Missed My Chance
Well, you can't say I didn't have a chance. There's an abandoned gas station on Niagara Street, about three blocks from an apartment where once lived. I still pass the corner five or six times a week. The gas station is an old building, decaying, with flaking paint and rusted out pumps, and when the setting sun hits it, it's really quite beautiful. I've always meant to photograph it, but every time I drove by there was some reason not to stop: maybe the lighting was wrong, or I was on my way to eat, or I didn't like the look of that group of kids hanging out nearby. Well, I had my chance but now it's too late. When I drove by today the gas station was gone, with not so much as a pile of rubble to indicate it had ever been there.
